What is temporary storage and why is it necessary?

Keen to understand temporary storage and the many different ways that it could benefit your business? If your current storage facility is struggling to keep up with the growing demand for your products or you’d like to prepare your business from an upcoming surge in seasonal popularity, you’re likely to need some kind of temporary storage facility to see you through!

Demand for storage space across the supply chain is soaring, but manufacturers are also looking for ways to bring down the operational cost of production and managing stock.

Our temporary buildings offer a cost-effective, on-site solution to their challenge with space.

At Mar-Key Group, we have over four decades of invaluable experience both designing and manufacturing a whole host of temporary storage solutions, so you can be confident that we know everything there is to know about temporary storage solutions and spaces. Below, we take a look at the meaning of temporary storage and why it’s important for businesses not only in the UK, but across the world.

We also explore the various different types of temporary storage structure to help you discover the perfect solution to meet (or even surpass) your semi-permanent storage requirements.

What is meant by temporary storage?

A robust and flexible solution to both temporary storage and seasonal storage issues, temporary storage refers to any non-permanent structure used for private or (most commonly) commercial storage. Often, these temporary storage spaces are used to house goods and merchandise, but can be used for practically any purpose – especially if they’ve been designed fully bespoke for a specific customer.

Why is this type of storage necessary?

Over the course of the next decade, the temporary storage building market is forecasted to grow exponentially, according to a Future Markets Insight report. As a British manufacturer, we’re keen to offer our temporary storage building solutions to likeminded manufacturers and logistics firms in the UK.

Temporary storage comes in handy for a variety of different reasons. From keeping down costs and creating almost instant overflow storage to providing essential space during the refurbishment of permanent buildings, temporary storage buildings and containers have a wide range of important, and sometimes essential, uses.

Not to mention, in the event that your permanent storage building requires extensive and intrusive maintenance or suffers unforeseen damage (such as flood, fire or hurricane damage), temporary storage is often necessary to keep your business afloat during this difficult time while permanent buildings are being repaired, rebuilt or replaced.

Plus, many businesses can spend a lot of time and money transporting their goods to storage facilities away from the place of manufacture. Instead of dedicating these valuable resources to the transport of these goods away from the site of manufacture, businesses can use these resources for other purposes if they’ve invested in additional temporary storage facilities on their existing site.

What are temporary storage buildings?

While schedule 2 of The Building Regulations 2010 describes a temporary building as “A building that is not intended to remain where it is erected for more than 28 days”, temporary storage can take various forms including temporary storage containers and temporary storage buildings – both of which can be erected for longer than this period with the right planning permission.

Types of temporary storage buildings

There are many different types of temporary buildings – the majority of which can be used for much more than simply storage! To help you figure out which structure is right for your business, we take a look at the various types of temporary storage buildings available at Mar-Key Group below. From roomy retail spaces that’ll give you plenty of square footage to store more stock on-site to temporary warehouse structures, there’s no shortage of temporary storage solutions to explore.

Industrial storage tents

While this form of storage is not available at Mar-Key Group, it does offer a reliable and sturdy solution for many businesses. This is because industrial storage tents come in a wide range of set shapes and sizes and can be quickly erected in a suitable area. This makes them ideal for emergency situations where additional insulated storage space is required as soon as possible.

Not only can these temporary solutions be sent out quickly to their destination, but they’re also some of the more affordable temporary storage structures. However, it’s worth mentioning that some industrial storage tents are particularly susceptible to condensation and require additional humidity control to ensure the contents are properly protected from damage. That’s where our range of structures excel.

Single skin steel storage buildings

Protective, durable and secure, single skin steel storage buildings are a fantastic temporary storage option. Boasting a more permanent and impressive appearance than industrial storage tents, these steel storage buildings offer a great level of security for long-term temporary storage projects. Designed to provide comprehensive protection from the elements, steel storage buildings are a popular choice for many of our clients.

While this storage solution has no natural insulating properties, it can be used in conjunction with other products to help tackle condensation. To provide more insultation to this type of temporary building, you can also opt for a robust thermo-inflated roof – ideal for eliminating that pesky condensation! Storage containers (shipping containers)

These large, corrugated metal storage containers are typically watertight and are often viewed as one of the more affordable temporary storage options on the market – suitable for both short-term and long-term hire as well as outright purchase. With proper maintenance, they can last anywhere between 25-30 years, so they can be a great investment.

However, if these containers are stored outdoors and aren’t maintained properly and are exposed to the elements, there is a risk that the metal exterior will gradually rust and deteriorate, leading to potential damage of the contents within. While storage containers do have a degree of insultation, they need to be modified in order to safely store cold or hot goods. Our structures are made using aluminium frame in component parts, offering a durable yet flexible solution to businesses.

Single skin PVC storage buildings

Durable and practical, single skin PVC storage buildings allow businesses that are in a hurry to expand their space to do so in a similar way to our single skin steel storage buildings. Ideal for using as wet-weather cover, pallet storage and even staff walkways, these temporary storage structures are known for being both easy to erect and transport.

A cost-effective solution to the storage challenges that many businesses face, our PVC buildings are available up to 30m wide and in any length, ensuring they’re suitable for a whole host of different businesses from various industries. Plus, if you require this building in a particular colour or with your branding on the exterior, please don’t hesitate to let us know and we’ll ensure it fits in seamlessly with surrounding buildings on your existing site.

Just like the single skin steel storage buildings, PVC storage buildings can also be fitted with an optional thermo-inflated roof to help combat the build up of condensation and provide additional insulation to the roof. To discover more about either our thermos-inflated roofing systems or our single skin PVC storage buildings, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with our helpful sales team today!

Insulated storage buildings

While many of our temporary storage solutions can be modified to provide a greater level of protection or insulation, our fully-insulated storage buildings come complete with this level protection, allowing them to remain in situ for years to come. Ideal for storing stock that requires temperature control, this structure is ideal for preventing both heat loss and condensation.

Providing optimal security and meeting those all-important UK Building and Fire Regulations, this storage solution is safe and secure. Not only are our insulated structures both long-lasting and robust, but these panels can also be manufactured in a variety of different thicknesses, colours, and finishes – all these factors can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of any business.

Our panels come with a standard thickness of 40mm for the walls and 60mm for the roof, however, these thicknesses can be adjusted if required. Furthermore, we also provide our customers with a choice of finishes (including trapezoidal, patterned profile and micro-rib/flat) and a selection of standard colourways – Pigeon Grey, Ivory, Black, White and Forest Green.

However, we can create our bespoke buildings in practically any colour – ideal if you want to ensure that your temporary storage solutions complement your more permanent buildings. Regardless of whether you’re keen to purchase one of these insulated storage buildings or you have a simple enquiry about how we work, please feel free to get in touch with our team!

Which temporary storage building is best?

Ultimately, the right temporary storage building for your business will depend on the type of products you wish to store in them, your budget and your timeframe. For example, if you require only a relatively small amount of storage space that’s both affordable and watertight, but offers only limited access to the contents, corrugated steel storage/shipping containers will typically do the job.

However, if you need something that has more curb appeal, insulation, lasts much longer and provides far easier access, investing in a more durable storage building is essential. Often, single skin PVC, single skin steel and insulated storage buildings can provide temperature-controlled environments that allow for the safe storage of a wide range of goods.

Upgrades are available such as flooring, roller shutter doors, and HVAC systems; features which are all provided as part of our service.

While these serve long term requirements, they are just as easily dismantled and repositioned between worksites to fulfil future requirements.

How expensive is this storage?

The exact cost of your chosen temporary storage solution will naturally vary according to a number of different factors. This includes the size, material and features of the storage solution as well as, of course, whether you choose to hire, lease or purchase the temporary storage structure. Additional factors that can affect the price also includes your choice of storage facility company and the logistics involved in both designing and transporting your temporary storage solution.

At Mar-Key Group, for example, we support businesses with all kinds of budgets thanks to our flexible payment options. We offer short term hire of our standard temporary storage structures for the dates of your choosing, as well as long term hire in the form of leasing our products. Alternatively, you can always outright purchase your storage solution (especially if it’s a bespoke product) to ensure it’s always available to support your business.
